Sunday 3rd November 2013

Pleased with yesterday’s efforts, so beware – it could easily go pear shaped today.

Chronological order, but as usual it’s a pick and mix concept. I’ve got one for tomorrow but I may tweet that.

Under 2.5 Goals

Bundesliga 2 (12:30pm GMT)

Sandhausen v  FSV Frankfurt

Sandhausen 2-0 FSV Frankfurt

Back To Lay

France Ligue 1 (13:00pm GMT)

Nice v Bordeaux

Lazio 0-2 Genoa

Hellas Verona v Cagliari

Hellas Verona 2-1 Cagliari

Over 2.5 Goals

Bundesliga 1 (14:30pm)

Augsburg 2-1 Mainz

Not bad. The results at Lazio and Nice surprised me, but in the case of Lazio I should have done my homework.

Suggestions For 26th/27th October 2013

As I mentioned in the last post, I’m going to be away for most of the weekend so this post is – hopefully – a useful list rather than recommendations.

There may be a couple of last minute additions depending on what time I leave…

BACK TO LAY

Friday 25th October

Bundesliga 2 (5:30pm)

St. Pauli v Sandhausen

Result: 0-0

Saturday 26th October

Serie B (2:00pm)

Virtus Lanciano v Padova

I cannot rule out a draw here – the hosts have drawn 13 of their last 25(!) home games so a possible alternative strategy may be to back the draw and then lay it off if either side scores. Hosts DNB might even be better as long as the price is greater than 1.50.

Virtus Lanciano 1, Padova 0

Bundesliga (2:30pm)

Hannover v Hoffenheim

Hannover 1-4 Hoffenheim. Extraordinary.

Sunday 27th October

Serie A (7:45pm – don’t forget the clock adjustment that happens overnight on Saturday)

Lazio v Cagliari

Lazio 2-0 Cagliari

Additional games that fell into this category are at Reading & Leicester (Sky Bet Championship), Guingamp (French Ligue 1) and Palermo (Serie B) – however, all of those matches involve sides that were either been promoted or relegated last season so their form may not actually mean that much.

——————————————————————————–

BACK TO LAY, MORE THAN 2.5 GOALS

Saturday 26th October

Sky Bet Championship (3:00pm)

Blackpool v Blackburn

Blackpool 2-2 Blackburn – only a late Blackburn equaliser stopped the win, but the trades would have worked well before then.

Sunday 27th October

Bundesliga 2 (12:30pm)

Union Berlin v Erzgebirge Aue

Used to be an Oberliga game in the old GDR

Union Berlin 1-0 Erzgebirge Aue. B2L won, goals not so much. Neutral.

——————————————————————————–

UNDER 2.5 GOALS

Friday 25th October (7:30pm)

France Ligue 1

Nantes v Lille

Nantes 0-1 Lille

Saturday 26th October (7:00pm)

France Ligue 1

Toulouse v Rennes

Toulouse 0-5 Rennes. Freak result or not?

Sunday 27th October (2:00pm)

Serie B

Carpi v Latina

Carpi 1-1 Latina

Spezia v Modena

Spezia 2-1 Modena

——————————————————————————–

OVER 2.5 GOALS

Saturday 27th October (2:30pm)

Bundesliga

Schalke 04 v Borussia Dortmund

Schalke 1-3 Borussia Dortmund

Free Football Tips Sunday 6th October 2013

Barclays Premier League (1:30pm)

Southampton v Swansea

Under 2.5 goals, lay Swansea – two wins in their last 20 trips to either the Dell or St. Mary‘s. Southampton have won seven of the last ten meetings.

Southampton 2, Swansea 0

Serie A (2:00pm)

Catania v Genoa

Back to lay on the hosts

Catania 1, Genoa 1 – Catania took the lead but a late own goal by Legrottaglie denied them victory. The trade won though.

Ligue 1 (4:00pm)

Bordeaux v Sochaux

Under 2.5 goals

Bordeaux 4, Sochaux 1 – third goal timed at 39 minutes.

Barclays Premier League (4:00pm)

Spurs v West Ham

Lay both teams to score, back under 2.5 goals and lay West Ham. Some extra information:

* West Ham have failed to score in half of their last 20 Premier League games, Spurs have kept four clean sheets in the their last ten games in the same competition.

* West Ham have also failed to score in six of their last ten trips to White Hart Lane in the league.

Result: Spurs 0, West Ham 3 – third goal timed at 79 minutes. Laying both teams to score worked, but the others didn’t. A genuine surprise.

Ligue 1 (8:00pm)

Marseilles v PSG

Under 2.5 goals – although I think this one might be worth backing over 2.5 to lay it off if there’s one early goal as the overs have won in five of the last six league meetings at Marseilles. The current Betfair odds are where I’d expect them to be.

Weekend Outlook 27/28/29 September 2013

Very basic post this weekend due to spending most of it with my nieces and their parents. I will be in Uncle Mode during the day before playing some kind of RPG that involves spaceships with their dad!

I’ve done the basic analyses for all of these games but haven’t done any ‘Last 20’ or ‘Head To Head’ investigations – if anything, I’ve spent more time comparing my odds with those on offer than I normally do and I’m happy that these all represent some sort of value even if they don’t win. My recommendation is to trade them all if possible but if you’re happy backing them straight up then that’s fine too.

Have a good weekend and the best of luck.

Weekend Outlook

Slightly different angle this week as there are more games than usual – and I needed to attend to some other matters this week.

Teams in bold type are worth considering from a back to lay point of view. I did as much preparation as possible, so to some extent this is a ‘wait and see’ effort but I’ll be surprised if I have a meltdown. Let’s see.

Friday 20th September

It might be worth considering laying the draw for both of these as well. I’d also advise backing under 2.5 goals in the St Etienne game.

France Ligue 2

Dijon v Tours (7:00pm)

Predicted goals: 2.13

Dijon 2, Tours 0

France Ligue 1

St Etienne v Toulouse (7:30pm)

Predicted goals: 1.94

St Etienne 1, Toulouse 2. St Etienne took the lead, so the trade won even though they lost the game.

Saturday 21st September

France Ligue 2

Angers v Auxerre (1:30pm)

Possibly also lay the draw. Not much head to head form, but Angers have won both of the last meetings at the Stade Jean Bouin. Predicted goals: 2.12

Angers 2, Auxerre 0

Italy Serie B

Cittadella v Juve Stabia (2:00pm)

The visitors are on an eleven game away losing streak: Cittadella aren’t exactly worldbeaters but they don’t lose at home that often. Consider laying Juve Stabia either outright or DNB. Predicted goals: 2.18, but the visitors defence isn’t great and their could be more.

Cittadella 0, Juve Stabia 2. Laying the draw was the right call, but laying them DNB was a loss.

1. Bundesliga

Hamburg v Werder Bremen (2:30pm)

HSV gave Thorsten Fink the boot after a poor start to the season and this could go either way – but seven of the last ten meetings at Hamburg in the Bundesliga have featured over 2.5 goals so I’m happy to recommend that. Predicted goals: 2.7

Hamburg 0, Werder Bremen 2

Premier League

WBA v Sunderland (3:00pm)

Possible surprise here. the Baggies have lost their last six home games (no win since March) and although they’ve won the last four meetings between these clubs at the Hawthorns, those are the only wins in the last ten encounters. Consider laying WBA. Predicted goals: 2.12

WBA 3, Sunderland 0

Sunday 22nd September

Italy Serie A

Roma v Lazio (2:00pm)

Lazio are awful away from ‘home’ and even though they share the Olympic Stadium with Roma they’ve only won once in the last ten derbies when they’ve been the ‘away’ side. At the very least lay them straight up. Predicted goals: 2.43

France Ligue 1

Nice v Valenciennes

Predicted goals: 1.99, which heavily implies a 1-0 or 2-0 Nice win.

Possible Games For This Weekend

These aren’t recommendations at all, but the games that this week’s edition of the Racing & Football Outlook (available from all good newsagents) think should fit the ‘home win with lots of goals’ profile in their ‘True Odds’ section:

Saturday

German Bundesliga

2:30pm

Borussia Dortmund v Schalke

Dortmund are currently in the 1.65-1.7 range, with >2.5 goals anywhere between 1.57 and 1.63.

3:00pm

Barclays Premier League

Manchester United v Stoke

Shouldn’t come as a massive shock that United are unbackable at 1.3 or lower, over 2.5 is currently between 1.5 and 1.62.

France Ligue 1 Orange

4:00pm

PSG v Reims

PSG are even shorter than Manchester United, which renders them unbackable as well. Over 2.5 in the same range as the game at Old Trafford.

Italy TIM Serie A

5:00pm

Juventus v Napoli

This is a bit more like it. La Vecchia Signora are anywhere between 1.7 and 1.8, which is more or less where the over 2.5 goals range is too.

Sunday

2:00pm

Italy TIM Serie A

Inter Milan v Catania

Inter are anywhere between 1.53 and 1.62 at the moment, which looks a little short: they’re arguably more reliable than Milan are this season, but I still don’t trust them completely. Over 2.5 is anywhere between 1.67 and 1.83 and I’d expect more standardisation here before the weekend.

Norway Tippeligaen

5:00pm

Tromso v Haugesund

Tromso are under 1.45 so leave them alone. Despite some small differences, the over 2.5 goals market looks stable at 1.57 or over. A bit of context here: Tromso can still mathematically qualify for the Europa League next season but they need to win this game in order to do so: they’ve reached the final of the Norwegian Cup, where they’ll play Hodd from the second tier. Haugesund have nothing to play for: ironically, they were knocked out of the cup by Hodd.

Monday

4:30pm

Finnish Veikkausliiga

HJK v FC Lahti

No prices at the moment.

Free Football Tips For Sunday 23rd September

I think it’s fair to say that attention will be elsewhere today and justifiably so. I’m not a Liverpool fan, but I am a football fan and what happened at Hillsborough was a disgrace.

Italy TIM Serie A

2:00pm GMT

Atalanta v Palermo

One away win in 20 league games for the visitors, but they’ve got reasonable form in the last few meetings at Atalanta and have a new manager so be careful. A low scoring game in prospect, HAM suggests 1-0, 0-0 (which could come up), 1-1, 2-0 and AU which also indicates under 3.5 goals.

Recommendation: lay Palermo, back under 3.5 goals (see below for a possible treble) and a one point bet on ‘No Goalscorer’

Result: Atalanta 1, Palermo 0, the goal came from Cristian Raimondi after 88 minutes…

4:00pm

Portugal Liga Zon Sagres

Nacional v Pacos de Ferreira

The visitors have been much better away from home recently, only losing four of their last ten games and they’re currently sitting in third place whilst Nacional are bottom of the table without a win. Here’s the catch: Pacos de Ferreira have won once at Nacional in the last ten games and the hosts have played precisely one home game so far…which they didn’t lose. In fact, they’ve only lost six of their last 20 home games in the league.

Recommendation: lay Pacos de Ferreira draw no bet

Result: 3-3 with a late equaliser from the visitors. Very close.

Barclay’s Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur v QPR

In other circumstances, Spurs would be home bankers today and although I can’t see them losing, there’s a bit of a question mark over whether they’ll win. They’ve only won half of their last ten league games at White Hart Lane and having starting this season with draws against WBA and Norwich there’s a case to be made that they’re not the team they used to be under Harry Redknapp. QPR are just horrible away from home so it’s easy to oppose them, but although I doubt if they’ll win, that doesn’t mean a point is beyond them.

Over 1.5 goals looks highly likely, but HAM seems to suggest that the outcome may depend on how long it takes Spurs to score and there’s already some evidence that it’s taking them longer to do so under the guidance of AVB. 1-1. 1-0, 2-0, 3-1 and 3-2 are all possibilities.

Recommendation: laying QPR is risky due to the current price and so it’s time to be creative. I’d be very surprised if there’s not a goal in the first half an hour, so I’m going to dutch 0-15 minutes and 16-30 minutes in the ‘time of first goal markets’ – that’s based on QPR’s defending as much as Spurs’ prowess going forward.

Result: Spurs 2. QPR 1. Rangers took the lead…in the 33rd minute. Just missed.

5:00pm

Romania Liga I Bergenbier

Astra Giurgiu v Gaz Metan Medias

Hosts should be about evens for this because it’s worth pointing out that they’ve not won three consecutive league games at home since April 2011 and a win today would equal that feat.  The visitors have won four of their last 20 games away from home in the league, but this looks like a low scoring game with as much chance of a scoreless draw as there is in the Atalanta/Palermo game earlier.

Recommendation: under 3.5 goals with possibly a one point bet on 0-0 as a correct score. There’s no market for ‘no goalscorer’ because – let’s face it – this is an obscure game nobody cares about 🙂

Result: Astra went mad in the second half and won 4-0, the last goal came three minutes before the end. Laying Gaz Metan Medias was the right call though so that’ll be neutral.

6:00pm

Portugal Liga Zon Sagres

Sporting Braga v Rio Ave

Braga should win this and complete the treble I suggested yesterday, but I wouldn’t recommend the price for the win. The hosts to win by one goal should be considered as this looks like a game without many goals (HAM comes up with 1-0, 2-1, AU, 2-0 and 0-1), but there’s also a possibility that Rio Ave may not score – something they’ve failed to do in seven of their last ten visits to Braga.

Recommendation: one point on Braga to win to nil, lay Rio Ave draw no bet. Under 3.5 goals features in the treble below.

Result: Braga 4, Rio Ave 1 – the treble I mentioned yesterday landed, as did a lay of under 3.5 goals (which was unexpected) and the AU mentioned above.

7:45pm

Italy TIM Serie A

Lazio v Genoa

Almost recommended a Lazio win, but Genoa won there last season and although the visitors are lousy on the road generally, they’ve gone thirteen away games without a win (four consecutive defeats) and that’s the kind of streak you have to keep an eye on sometimes. HAM adds a note of caution: 1-0, AU, 1-1, 1-2 and 2-0 look likely scorelines, so it’s a similar kind of game to Spurs v QPR in that respect as it seems to depend on how long it takes Lazio to score to indicate the outcome: over 1.5 goals also looks likely.

Recommendation: lay Genoa draw no bet, over 1.5 goals.

Result: Genoa do it again – they won 1-0.

Multiples:

I’ve already laid Braga to cover the Chelsea/Porto/Braga treble, but there’s a goals bet that looks as if it may work if combined:

Under 3.5 goals at Atalanta, Astra Giurgiu and Braga – would pay just under evens but might be worth doing. Inexpensive lays are available on Betfair.

Free Football Tips For Sunday 2nd September

Interesting set of games today, I don’t feel that I can recommend an outright win for any of the home teams although Steaua, Inter and Lazio arguably stand the best chance.

I haven’t covered Italy that much in the last two and a half years, but that’s going to change this season. I enjoy watching Serie A more than La Liga anyway – it’s a much more competitive competition and I think there’s greater strength in depth generally. I need to do some extra stat work on Serie A but I’ll use the international break to do that.

Portugal Liga Zon Sagres

4:00pm

Gil Vicente v Vitoria Setubal

Although they won this game last season, Setubal have only won three of the last 20 games on the road. HAM likes 1-1, 3-0, 0-0, 0-1 and 2-0, which implies a low scoring game in which both teams won’t score. Over 1.5 goals is likely (so is under 3.5 goals) but with two of those correct scores coming in under that it might be worth avoiding, especially as Setubal don’t score that many goals away from home.

Recommendation: lay Setubal and trade the goal markets.

Result: 0-0.

Romania Liga I Bergenbier

6:00pm.

Steaua Bucharest v Otelul Galati

Steaua have a very good home record in the league: 15 wins and two defeats in the last 20 matches with a goal difference of +24. They’ve also beaten Otelul Galati in 16 of their last 17 meetings but there’s a minor issue that could scupper a home win: although they seem to have picked up their strike rate recently, they’re primarily a defensive team and that’s something the visitors may be able to exploit.

For example, in 15 of those 20 games at home they’ve scored less than three goals and kept clean sheets in less than half of them. On the other hand, Otelul have scored in 15 of their last 20 away matches – and although they’ve only scored twice in their last ten visits to Steaua that doesn’t mean it’s going to be one way traffic.

HAM: 1-0, 2-1, 1-2, Any Unquoted and 2-0.

Recommendation: at time of drafting the original post (Thursday evening) Steaua were too short for the win and by the time kick off comes round they may have even dropped under 1.5. The draw is intriguing though, especially as there’s a lack of them in the head to head aspect as well as in Otelul’s recent away record. Laying Otelul DNB looks like the way forward to me, as does backing under 3.5 goals.

No Bet – missed the bl**dy kickoff by an hour. It finished Steaua 2, Otelul 1.

Italy Serie A TIM

7:45pm

Catania v Genoa

The hosts lost three of their last five home games in Serie A at the end of last season, but they’ve not lost three in a row since the beginning of 2009. They’ve also won four of the last five meetings between these two at the Angelo Massimino stadium – and considering Genoa have only won two of their last 20 away games in Serie A this looks like a game the visitors won’t win.

HAM: 1-0, Any Unquoted, 1-1, 2-1, 2-0. The implication there seems to be that If Catania get an early lead it could get ugly. If you fancy something different, lay any score where Genoa might score three goals…but only if you can afford it.

Recommendations: lay Genoa, dutch the scores mentioned above.

Result: Catania 3, Genoa 2. Lay was correct, scoreline wasn’t.

Inter Milan v Roma

Inter are currently on a four game winning streak at the Giuseppe Meazza but they’ve still got a way to go to equal the thirteen wins in a row that they managed in 2010/11. Roma’s recent form on the road has been patchy but they’ve only lost twice away to Inter in their last ten Serie A games: it’s almost as if they save their best form for the Nerazzurri. The problem is that they’ve only won two of those meetings.

HAM: Any unquoted, 2-1, 0-0, 0-1, 2-0

Recommendation: a draw cannot be ruled out but looking at the HAM scores it’s obvious that the best chance is 0-0 – which is what happened last season and looks unlikely. Laying Roma draw no bet could be worth doing but a lot depends on whether Inter score two or more goals: if they do, they won’t lose.

Result: totally wrong – Inter 1, Roma 3. Next Inter home game is against Siena on 23rd September – that might come up, but I’ll see at the time how it pans out.

Lazio v Palermo

Lazio: three defeats in their last 20 homes. Palermo: two wins in their last 20 aways. Can’t see Palermo winning this game but there’s enough head to head evidence to indicate it might not be as straightforward as Lazio would like.

HAM: 1-0, 2-0, 0-0, 1-1 with a tie for 1-2 and Any Unquoted – so I’m tempted to leave the correct score market alone.

Recommendation: lay Palermo.

Result: Lazio 3, Palermo 0

I’m not sure how I’m going to play next week – I may just concentrate on American Football.
